Jiang Tingxi's Mandarin Ducks may bring $400,000 to New York auction

Jiang Tingxi's Mandarin Ducks in Lotus Pond will star alongside Qi Baishi on September 9

A New York auction house is to celebrate its 10th anniversary with a strong line-up of Chinese paintings, which will be headlined by Jiang Tingxi's Mandarin Ducks in Lotus Pond.

Aside from painting,Tingxi also edited an important 18th century encyclopedia

The Qing dynasty work will sell on September 9 with a $250,000-400,000 estimate.

Described as "an excellent example of the romanticism and balance inherent in fine Chinese paintings", the piece is a stunning hanging scroll from Tingxi - a renowned painter who also edited the important Gujin Tushu Jicheng encyclopedia, a complete collection of illustrations and writings published in 1726.

Tingxi's work will feature alongside several pieces from one of China's most influential artists, Qi Baishi. His lively Portrait of Zhong Kui, the Exorcist has an estimate of $80,000-100,000, while Rooster and Peonies is a colourful, more characteristic example of Baishi's fluid style, and will auction for $60,000-80,000.

Also featuring is the world's top-selling artist of 2011, Zhang Daquian. Daquian's work achieved a staggering $506.7m in sales last year, with his Lotus and Mandarin Ducks selling for $24.6m at Sotheby's - a new world record for the artist.

The New York auction will not be featuring works as valuable as those at Sotheby's, though it will provide an excellent opportunity to own a piece of his work at more modest prices. Red Lotus Splashed is undoubtedly one of the most striking works on offer, with an estimate of $60,000-80,000.
