Sir Malcolm Campbell's Bluebird Car model could speed to £50,000

A piece of automobilia representing Campbell's 950hp land speed record vehicle will auction in July

A fine silver-plated presentation model of 'Bluebird 1928', the land speed record car driven by motor legend Malcolm Campbell, will be sold at Bonhams as part of the annual Goodwood Festival of Speed sale on July 2.

The model, which represents the 950hp Napier engine car Campbell drove to achieve the land speed record - 206.96mph - at Daytona Beach in February 1928, was donated by Donald Campbell, Sir Malcolm's son, to their old school, St Peter's, Seaford, Sussex.

Estimated at £30,000-35,000, the historic piece of automobilia bears the engraving: "The Bluebird 1928, Presented to St Peter's School by Donald Campbell, In Memory of his father Sir Malcolm Campbell MBE."

Sir Malcolm broke nine land speed records between 1924 and 1935, and was the first man to exceed 300mph on land in 1935.

He went on to break four water speed records; his highest speed on water was 141.74mph in 1939 in a Bluebird K4 on Coniston Water in the Lake District.

The silver trophy presented to the racing legend Sir Malcolm Campbell to commemorate his first world water speed record on Lake Maggiore appeared at Bonhams earlier this year with an estimate of £35,000-50,000.
