Porsche and L-29 classic cars star in $23m Amelia Island Concours sale

More than $23m in classic car sales were achieved at the Amelia Island Concours d'Elegance in Florida, over the weekend. The Ritz-Carlton venue was host to a packed auction house. Collectors' enthusiasm saw 92 of the 106 pre and post-war classic automobiles find new homes.

Six of the classics for sale achieved million-dollar-plus results. The star car was a 1929 Cord L-29 Special Coupe by The Hayes Body Corporation. The rolling work of art is a one-off design statement by Count Alexis de Sakhnoffsky.

Widely considered to be the most significant L-29 in existence, and an outstanding example of Classic Era styling, the "Hayes Coupe" attracted plenty of attention and competitive bids. In the end, the 1929 Cord L-29 Special Coupe sold for $2.42m to rapt applause.

Other auction highlights included a parade of 18 Porsches from the famed collection of Matthew Drendel. As anticipated, a Porsche 917/30 Can-Am was the Drendel Collection's top lot. It brought $4.4m.

"We're very pleased with the results achieved both in the auction room and on the show field, as well as the strong global interest in the sale - bidders hailed from 16 countries around the world," said auctioneer Rob Myers.

"The Amelia sale wrapped up a fantastic two weeks in Florida for RM, including the recent Milhous Collection sale presented in association with Sotheby's. Combined, the events generated more than $61m in sales, illustrating the continued strength of the collectibles hobby."
