A 1936 Rolls-Royce Phantom III 3-Position drop head coupe (DHC) has broken the auction world record for its type at a classic car sale in Monaco.
The vehicle, with coachwork by Gurney Nutting, almost doubled its estimate with a €1.1m ($1.4m) showing at Coys' Legende et Passion auction in May, setting a record for a Nutting-buit Phantom III 3-Position DHC in the process.

Just 727 Phantom IIIs were made, with each produced by one of a carefully selected group of coachbuilders.
The impressive result has much to do with Nutting. The British coachmaker was famed for its ability to produce cars of great beauty, with Edward VIII and his brother George VI both customers in the 1920s.
Another Gurney Nutting creation, a Bentley 4¼ litre coupe, sold for €226,910 ($283,050), while a 1954 Mercedes-Benz 300SL Gullwing made €674,750 ($841,750).
A Ferrari Dino, formerly owned by F1's Frank Williams, sold for €154,136 ($192,300).
The Historic Auto Group's price index of leading classic cars revealed earlier this month that values of Ferraris are up 9.09% since the start of the year.
"Ferrari trumps all other names in terms of prestige and liquidity," classic car expert Simon Kidston recently told Bloomberg.
"If you have a good car that's priced correctly, you can find a buyer within hours."
A Ferrari 599XX Evoluzione is currently being auctioned by the Italian car manufacturer to raise funds for the victims of the recent earthquakes in Italy.
