All-American Comics #16 brings $203,150 in 'greatest-ever comics auction'

Unrestored All-American Comics #16 comics are very hard to come by, hence this copy's sale success

A Dallas, Texas, sale has officially become the single greatest comics auction ever conducted after its total sales realised more than $8.79m, last week (February 22-24).

The star of the show was Detective Comics #27. The 1939 first-ever comic appearance of Batman sold for $523,000. You can read our report on this and other highlights from the Billy Wright collection here.

Also auctioned from the noted Billy Wright collection was a copy of All-American Comics #16 (DC, 1940) CGC VF 8.0, featuring the first appearance of Green Lantern.

Meanwhile, non-Billy Wright Collection highlights in the sale included a Bill Watterson Calvin and Hobbes 1989-90 Calendar Cover.

Few comic artworks are as rare and sought-after as Calvin and Hobbes originals by the characters' creator Bill Watterson. For many collectors, the Calvin and Hobbes newspaper strips are in the same league as Peanuts.

Being a private person, and one of the few cartoonists to shun growing trends for merchandising in the 20th century, Watterson art is scarce and highly in demand.

This piece, formerly owned by the noted collector Rick Marschall, brought $107,550 (including Buyer's Premium).
