Parting of Coriolanus from his Wife100.jpg

Etienne Aubry's Parting of Coriolanus 'last' artwork auctions in Paris sale

The 'Parting of Coriolanus from his Wife' by Etienne Aubry could bring €120,000 in this Paris art auction

A quick look at the art markets reveals this piece by Etienne Aubry (1745-1781), the Versailles-born genre painter noted for his portraits, which is auctioning in Paris on March 23.

This painting is entitled the 'Parting of Coriolanus from his Wife'. The work has had some restoration work over the years. It is housed within a gilt wood frame.

The tragic life of Roman leader Caius Marcius Coriolanus also inspired an eponymous play by Shakespeare, written between 1605 and 1608.

The 'Parting of Coriolanus from his Wife' is especially noted for being the last work exhibited by Aubry at the Salon of 1781 in Paris, shortly before his death. Between 1748-1890, the Salon was the greatest annual or biannual art event in the Western world.

This work has also been held in some noted collections, including the Collection of Jacques Augustin Silvestre (1719-1809).

How much for a work of this calibre? It carries a €80,000-120,000 presale estimate.

Given the immense esteem in which Etienne Aubry is held - and this work in particular - the 'Parting of Coriolanus from his Wife' will surely be a big draw for discerning art collectors in Paris.
