Tiger Woods memorabilia

Is Tiger Woods memorabilia the most undervalued in sport?

Despite his private life troubles, Tiger Woods memorabilia prices could be set to soar

He has been in the news more for his indiscretions than his golf, but what does this mean for the value of Tiger Woods' memorabilia?

That's the question many investors looking for the diversity offered by the sports collectibles sector are asking themselves.

Mike Heffner, a sports memorabilia expert, remains positive.

"I don't think it's going to affect [Woods' memorabilia] that greatly," he recently told the Wall Street Journal.

"Other athletes have been through these trials and tribulations, and they're remembered for what they did in their field."

If Heffner is correct, Tiger Woods memorabilia could be a great long-term investment, as prices remain very much in the entry-level bracket.

A circa-2004 tournament-worn shirt, which sold for $5,000 at a US auction in October 2008, is the standout piece of recent years.

To many observers, Tiger Woods memorabilia looks currently undervalued. It could well receive a major boost when he retires, with nostalgic collectors entering the market to own a piece of arguably the greatest golfer of all time.

Values are climbing, but have a long way to go. According to the PFC40 Autograph Index, Woods' autograph has risen in value from £750 ($1,150) to £1,750 ($2,680) since 2000, at a rate of 8.01% pa.

Opportunities to own Woods autographs are few and far between - he is the second rarest living signature, behind Neil Armstrong.

That's because Woods' signing rights are tightly controlled by his licensing company; he is only supposed to sign limited editions.

Yet our experts have managed to source one of these rare specimens. And what's more the bold autograph features on the brim of a PGA Tour cap.
