Winston Churchill

Unseen Winston Churchill photograph up 25% on estimate at UK auction

The photograph shows a relieved and weary looking Winston Churchill in 1899…

A previously unseen photograph of Britain's wartime prime minister, Sir Winston Churchill, has beaten its high estimate by 25% at an auction in the UK.

Showing Churchill on horseback following his escape from a prison camp during the Boer War, it sold for £750, or £930 with commission, comfortably above its £300-600 valuation.

The photograph dates to 1899, when Churchill was just 26-years-old. It shows him wearing a suit and tie, and wide-brimmed hat. He is surrounded by men of the South African Light Horse Regiment.
