Queen Anne maple dresser makes $9,500 at fine art auction

The Queen Anne maple dresser was among the highlights of an antique US furniture auction

A Queen Anne period (1665-1714) maple dresser has sold for $9,500 at a Fine Art, Antiques & Asian Treasures auction in Maine.

The Massachusetts maple highboy dresser was among the many star pieces of period American furniture to go under the hammer at the June 9 and 10 sale - its swan neck pediment, flame twist finials, and fan-carved top centre drawer proving attractive to buyers.

A Hepplewhite Mahogany tall clock, made by Frederick Wingate in 1817, also performed well. Featuring a fretwork crown with three brass finials, in addition to quarter columns with brass fittings, it sold for $10,000.

The auction also featured a circa 1780 Pennsylvania Chippendale tall chest, fashioned from Virginia red walnut. It sold for $5,000.

Meanwhile, a small New York Sheraton solid mahogany huntboard with inlaid and string banded decoration sold for $2,250.

Kaja Veilleux, the auction house's owner, said: "Never have I seen so many wonderful and rare items in our gallery. Many of the fine pieces in this sale represent the lifetime collections of three important families."

English period furniture too is proving hot property around the world.

A recent report by the Daily Mail newspaper revealed that prices for English furniture in China are selling for 10 times the amounts achieved in the UK.
