One of South Africa's leading 20th century artists is appearing at a South African Art Sale in London on March 21.
J.H. Pierneef (1886-1957) loved both landscapes and architecture, and his work adorns South Africa House in Trafalgar Square
Pierneef's 'A view over Chuniespoort' dates to 1945 and is a perfect representation of the artist's passion for both architecture and nature.
'A view over Chuniespoort' will appear in London with a £300,000-500,000 presale estimate.
The work is notable for its use of a simplified palette which mimics the arrangement of South African rondavels (huts) with the arrangement of trees and mountains.

As is typical of Pierneef's works, there is no sign of human life in this piece. Instead, the focus is on idealised trees, rocks and mountains, all drafted with the simplified skill.
'A view over Chuniespoort' will undoubtedly draw art collectors for whom South Africa's artists hold increasing appeal year-on-year.
The March 21 auction will also offer two works by another South African art market blue chip, Irma Stern.
Stern's 1935 painting entitled Zulu Woman is estimated to sell for £400,000 to £600,000 ($941,664). Zulu Woman was painted by Stern while at the height of her creative powers.
Auctioning alongside it is the Pink Sari from 1947. Inspired by the artist's trips to Zanzibar, the work could bring £800,000-1,200,000.
