Cuno Amiet

Cuno Amiet painting up 50.4% on estimate at Modern art auction

A painting by pioneer of the Modern movement Cuno Amiet has made $59,133 in Munich

Cuno Amiet's 1925 painting Brustbild einer Dame (Irene) has beaten its €25,000-30,000 ($39,810) estimate with a €45,140 ($59,133) auction performance.

The result, achieved at a major Modern art sale in Munich, Germany, on April 27, represents a 50.4% increase on its pre-sale high estimate.

Amiet (1868-1961), famed for his use of colour, was one of the leading exponents of the Modern artistic movement in Switzerland. The work bears the influence of Amiet's idol Ferdinand Hodler.

The estimate-beating sale is further confirmation of the strength of the Amiet auction market, across all investment price brackets.

His 1908 piece Oschwand sold for $844,800 at Sotheby's in 2001, while Stilleben from 1907 made $688,020 with the same auction house in 2006.

Hermann Hesse's 1923 watercolour Montagnola sold within estimate for €16,000 ($20,960) at a post-auction sale. The piece had superb provenance, having come from the collection of Hermann's second son Heiner.

Pablo Picasso's lithograph Homards et poisons achieved €15,000 ($19,650), again at a post-auction sale. It was one of six Picasso works to sell, including two superb ceramics from the 1950s, which made €2,500 ($3,275) and €3,000 ($3,930), respectively - evidence that it remains possible for entry-level buyers to pick up works by the great man, such was Picasso's considerable output.
