Video of the Week: Christie's successfully sells legendary artists' works

Picasso, Gauguin and Monet were just some of the megastars whose works were sold

Christie’s amazing sale of artworks created by some of the most famous names in history, from Michelangelo to Monet to Picasso, was a storming success as roughly £140m ($225m) was made in total.

The standout work, legendary Spanish surrealist Pablo Picasso's painting Femme Assise Robe Bleue, was sold to a Greek art buyer for a mesmerising $29m.

Another of his brilliant pieces, Jeune Fille Endormie, sold for $21.9m. Proceeds from this sale will be donated to Australia's Sydney University to help fund scientific research.

Other fantastic lots which should not be forgotten include Le Vallon by Paul Gauguin, which made $10.3m, Henri Matisse's work Océanie, La Mer, reaching $4.7m, and Paul Klee's Tanzerin which sold for £6.7m.

The sale was the first of several significant auctions coming up during the next few weeks by Christie's and rivals Sotheby's.
