Winston Churchill

Bust of Churchill

Bronze Churchill head busts estimate to sell for £12k

Bidders battle for the great man's memorabilia

A bust of Winston Churchill created in bronze and patinated in green by the artist Sir William Reid Dick has been sold in London by Bonhams (as we reported it would).

Churchill reportedly placed a decidedly low urgency on sitting for the work, and in fact had to be pressed into it by King George VI.

At least one bidder is very glad that he did, and they fought off other bids to buy the unique piece of memorabilia, which makes a good job of capturing Churchill's likeness, at £12,000 ($20,000). It was only estimated at £3,000-5,000.

An armchair belonging to Churchill also sold for more than expected, doubling its low estimate of £1,000 to sell for £2,040 ($3,400). The chair had been in the family of antique dealer John Day for nearly four decades after he acquired it following Churchill's death.

Those interested in the great man may wish to view our autographed photo of him.

Churchill memorabilia remains in great demand. His sofa, battered and almost thrown in a skip, sold for an impressive £7,500 ($12,500) during the summer.
