1982 Chateau Petrus at $55,000 in Sotheby's The Classic Cellar
Chateau Petrus will lead superb 1982 Bordeaux vintages in the Hong Kong auction

Sotheby's The Classic Cellar auction is to feature the "king of investments" Chateau Petrus among its top lots, with 12 bottles of the 1982 vintage offered on October 5 in Hong Kong.

The auction is being hailed as the greatest single-owner wine collection sold in Sotheby's history, with a stunning range of classic 1982 Bordeaux dominating the sale. Elsewhere, a spectacular line-up of Louis Roederer Cristal, Dom Perignon and California wines will sell, all having been stored in unrivalled conditions.
However, none of these choice selections are able to knock a 1999 DRC Romanee-Conti from the top spot, where a 6 litre Methuselah sits with an estimate of $80,000-120,000. 1999 was the year when DRC wines "attained perfection", according to Sotheby's, and the mighty Romanee-Conti embodies all of the best qualities from across the estate.
Excellent results are expected from the 1982 Chateau Petrus, with 12 bottles selling at $40,000-55,000. A distinctly original wine, quality Petrus is considered a rarity due to the relatively small space the estate occupies in the Pomerol appellation. Paul Fraser Collectibles highly recommends this lot for investors, as it boasts an average annual return of 14%.
For those with a smaller budget, another of the Bordeaux "big 10", 12 bottles of the 1998 Le Pin, will sell with an $18,000-25,000 estimate.
More 1982 success will be seen by one of the world's most valuable wines, Chateau Lafite, when three imperials will sell for $25,000-35,000. Also starring from this prime vintage is six magnums from Chateau Latour, which come in just below the Lafite at $22,500-32,500.
