1969 Romanee-Conti magnum may see $15,000 at Bonhams

The 1969 magnum of Romanee-Conti will face competition from '76 and '71 vintages

A single magnum of 1969 Romanee-Conti will feature as part of Bonhams' forthcoming Fine and Rare Wines sale on September 8.

Romanee-Conti has recently regained its place as the most popular Burgundy

The auction features a number of bottles to suit the budgets of all collectors, with a range of white wines and ports also making an appearance. Held in New York, the sale occurs on the same day as Christie's own wine auction in Hong Kong, which features Lafite, Mouton and Latour verticals.

The Romanee-Conti magnum leads Bonhams' sale as the highest priced single lot, with an estimate of $10,000-15,000. It will face stiff competition from a standard bottle of the 1976 vintage, which will feature with an estimate of $5,000-7,000 as one of the more desirable years from the DRC vineyard.  

This will be followed by a lot of two bottles of 1971 Romanee-Conti, which will sell for $15,000-20,000. The DRC favourite has recently regained its top spot as the most popular Burgundy among collectors following quality improvements, according to Christie's wine specialist Anthony Hanson at a recent course held in Vienna.

Hanson also cited Chateau Petrus as the king of wine investments, after it displayed an average annual return of 14%. A 1955 magnum of Petrus will be offered by Bonhams in the sale at $3,000-5,000 - a bargain considering its outstanding performanceat auction recently.

A six bottle case of 2000 Chateau Petrus beat its $20,000 high estimate by 33.1% in Christie's inaugural online wine sale.

One of the highest priced lots in the sale comes from the 1982 Chateau Lafite Rothschild, a case of which is expected to bring $25,000-35,000. Another 12 bottle case of the 1982 vintage sold as top lot in the online Christie's sale, bringing $42,350 against a $35,000-45,000 estimate.  

Paul Fraser Collectibles' sister company, PFC Auctions, will be featuring some exciting wine lots in its September sale, which opens September 6.
