1919 3 cent Newfoundland Hawker Flight

1919 Hawker flight stamp could bring $20,000 in LA

A rare 1919 3 cent Hawker stamp, designed for the first trans-Atlantic flight, will auction on June 10

A 1919 Newfoundland stamp, designed for the flight of Lieut. Harry Hawker, and one of Canada's greatest airmail rarities, will lead bids in a Los Angeles sale on June 9.

Harry Hawker Newfourndland stamp
The stamp from Hawker's famous failed attempt

Harry Hawker was an Australian pilot who, in 1919, attempted the first continuous trans-Atlantic flight, in pursuit of the Daily Mail's £10,000 prize. After setting off from Newfoundland, the engine of his aircraft overheated 14 hours into the flight and he was forced to change course.

The 1919 stamp was designed to frank the correspondence carried by Lieutenant Hawker on his historic attempt. A total of 200 stamps were created, with the majority sold off in aid of the Marine Disasters Fund. This example, estimated at $20,000, was taken from one of just two extant pairs of the stamp which were sold through the same auction house earlier in 2012.

Elsewhere in the sale, a stunning mint example of one of the rarest US stamps, the $3 1867 Washington Z grill is expected to bring $15,000. The Z grill issue is so-called due to the variety of grill used to press the stamp, which allowed cancelling ink to be absorbed into the paper. Collectors will also have the chance to bid on a fantastic set of used Z grill stamps in tomorrow's (June 7) sale of the Natalee Grace Collection.
