1912 World Series Cup Trophy Boston Red Sox

1912 World Series trophy achieves $239,000 at Heritage Auctions

The 1912 World Series trophy presented to Boston Red Sox manager Jake Stahl has sold as part of Heritage Auctions' landmark sale at the National Sports Collectors Convention.

The trophy attracted huge attention from collectors at the convention yesterday (August 2) as an important relic from baseball's greatest ever championship. The 1912 World Series saw the Boston Red Sox defeat the New York Giants in a breathtakingly close victory, secured by Fred Snodgrass' infamous "$30,000 muff".

The season which preceded the Red Sox's epic win has been recognised as the most important in the history of the team, marking the opening of the historic Fenway Park and the start of a run that would see them win four world championships in a seven season span.

Having been described as "technically priceless" by Heritage Auctions and believed to be a unique item after team owner James McAleer's trophy was declared lost, Stahl's silver cup sold for $239,000. It was accompanied in a lot by the only image of the winning team in public or private hands, which was taken by the renowned baseball photographer Carl Horner.

Despite its significance, the cup was overshadowed in the sale by the Black Swamp Find baseball cards, which sold with superb results, led by a PSA Gem Mint 10 Honus Wagner. Find out more here.
